HOW TO USE WINDOWS 11 FOLDER COLOR CHANGER
At its simplest, use one of the following methods to send one or more selected folders to the app.
Drag folders from Windows Explorer onto the target
or
Right click one or more folders and send them to the app using the context menu
or
Add folders on the Manage Folders tab
or
Enable hotkeys, select folders in Windows Explorer and press ALT-Q to send them to the app
The target on the Home tab will change colors, indicating the app has been “armed” (ready to apply your customization).

Hi,
Thank you for quickly taking into account my request to also be able to color-code network drives. BUT – unfortunately this doesn’t work (yet), the default color doesn’t change.
I also have a few other suggestions to significantly improve user-friendliness:
+ The program should – at least – remember the last opened palette or you should be able to define a default palette. This is because otherwise it is difficult to remember which color you have chosen
AND/OR the program should automatically jump to the correct palette when you select a colored folder in Explorer
AND/OR for the current color it should be displayed which palette it is in
-> it’s about the traceability and reproducibility of color assignment
+ I haven’t found any explanation as to how I can create and save palettes myself!?
+ It would be great if a palette consisted of more than 8 colors (12 or 16)
Thank you for your program!
Hello,
Thank you for your feedback. Kindly note, network drives and top level network shares are not supported, as they are not interpreted by Windows as “folders”. E.g. \\mypc\myfolder and z:\ are not considered folders by Windows. Only second level+ folders will work, e.g. \\mypc\myfolder\my subfolder. Also refer to https://www.foldercolorchanger.com/ive-customized-a-network-folder-but-im-not-seeing-anything/ as you must make the registry entry on client PCs in order for these icons to work.
The next version will include the ability to select your default color palette and remember the last selected palette. We are looking into ways to expand the number of colors, however, we have limited space to work with, so we have to be creative. To create a custom palette, you can simply mix colors (click and hold on any color to open the mixer). Once you’re happy with your set of colors, click Save color palette. You can also click Install color palette to permanently import your saved color palette into the list of available palettes. (As for automatically jumping to the palette, that’s a great idea, but we’ll have to figure out a way what to do if the color appears in more than one palette).
Also remember that you can save any custom icon design in the app as an IDA file (including pure colors) by clicking the Save button next to the preview icon, and you can save colors directly in the Advanced Color Mixer too!
We’re working to create new how to’s and FAQs for our new website coming in 2025. Hopefully this will showcase all our great features!
Hello again,
Update 1.1.0.22 adds the ability to right click on a palette to set it as your default palette. Also, under Options (second page), you can enable the option to auto select your default palette when the app runs. If a default palette is not available, the app retains the last used colors. We’re still working on how to add more colors. We hope you’ve come right with mixing individual colors in the mean time.
Thank you version 1.1.0.23 increased the number of color swatches to 20. Very useful now.
