I have just noticed that the app is installed in under in “C:\Users\******\AppData\Roaming\Delitech (Pty) Ltd\Windows 11 Folder Color Changer\”
I am not sure why, but it seems unusual, and performance is very slow. How can I rectify this please? My product key is *****.
Also as a future enhancement would it be possible to store a number of of color options for ease of reuse? Maybe 8 or 10?
Thanks
Hello Peter,
Thank you for your valuable feedback. (We redacted your product key).
The installation folder is correct. This is because different Windows users on the same computer may have different settings, so we need to store each user’s settings within their own user profile. The Roaming folder is therefore the most suitable for this purpose.
Performance will mostly depend on your computer configuration, and as noted on our website, the context menu itself may perform significantly slower than the other methods to apply folder icons.
You’ll be happy to know that our dev team is already working on saving color palettes. It’s coming soon!
Coming in version 1.1.0.16.
It will now be possible to disable dark theme and shadows to boost performance. The app can perform up to 25% faster on slower computers (warning: the app will run in light mode; it’s very bright!)
We will be enabling the ability to save and load individual colors as we’re moving forward with custom color sets.
Is there a version that can work with shared folders on a network? Mapped drives from a NAS for example. Please advise and thank you
Hello! Yes, this is one of our most requested features. It’s currently in testing! https://www.foldercolorchanger.com/coming-soon-support-for-network-folders/
Please make the dark mode a Windows dark gray color as seen in it’s dark mode instead of the black color used in the UI. It will be much more beneficial to your customers.
Please also make it possible to make custom lists of icon sets in the context menu of windows explorer for quick and productive access and efficiency π
Hello Drake,
Thank you for your valuable feedback. With regards to dark mode, you’ll be happy to know that we’re refreshing the theme in the upcoming update. See here: https://foldercolorchanger.com/screenshots/v21darktheme.png
As for the context menu, that’s a different ball game entirely. Windows 11 in particular is very fussy as to what can be added and when. We’ll pass your feedback onto our developer team for consideration. In the interim, we hope you continue using and enjoying our app!
Hi, this software and your homepage is detected as dangerous and blocked by bitdefender. Maybe you survey this to prevent. If not you are really producing dangerous software …. ;-))
Hello, our team is aware of the issue, and has alerted BitDefender to this, providing our installation file and executable. Our app is doing nothing malicious; in fact, when requesting more details on this detection, BitDefender seems to be flagging our very features, i.e. hotkeys, ability to modify folders, and our event log. We are awaiting the outcome of their review. Thank you for your comment, and rest assured, our app is entirely safe to use.
Hello again,
We’re happy to advise that as of 25 Feb 2025, BitDefender no longer flags our app following our engagements.

Hi, can I ask some questions before buying the paid version.
Does it change folder color but still retain the folder thumbnail preview that shows the images contained in that folder?
Also, i use this trick from http://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-customize-folder-thumbnails-in-windows-11-22h2/ to change how the thumbnail looks, does it still work if i install your program?
Good day,
Thank you for your comment!
With regards to your first question, our app does not retain the original thumbnail preview, but you can certainly recreate it to some extent, by combining a full size inset image with the mask. It does entail a more manual approach, but it also offers more flexibility. If the content is a certain file type, you can also design your ‘thumbnail’ icon and save it as a design to re-use elsewhere, or otherwise apply it to multiple folders.
The utility referenced on the Neowin page seems interesting. The end result is more of a flat icon design. Our dev team is already experimenting with a plain flat design, which is essentially the ‘open folder’ icon style, without the ‘flap’. This utility seems to simply layer a custom user design on top of this image. We don’t support this out of the ‘box’ yet, but we most certainly will pass this idea on to our devs, as it shouldn’t be too difficult to do in one of our next updates.
Should you otherwise proceed to purchase a license, and you don’t like the app as it is, we’re happy to refund your payment. And of course, if you do like our app, do give us a shout out to interested users somewhere on Neowin and other platforms if you’re an active user there.
Again, thank you for your interest!
The flat folder design is now available, and can be combined with inset images to create a very similar look.
Hello! I purchased a license earlier and I have been having a good time organizing my setup and folders. I had a suggestion I wanted to pass on however. I notice the developers are experimenting with flat folder icons, that’s awesome! But I wondered how possible it would be to implement a more in depth coloring/gradient system to folders, to make them more complex potentially? I wanted to provide a link to web based folder editor for the developers to look at as an example.
https://icon11-community.github.io/icons/icon-maker.html
Essentially, breaking the folder up into layers, and using the current overlay icon setup would be perfect! Another idea could be for users to create their own folder icon as a base image (png, svg), using predefined dimensions, and then they can set overlay images or icons on top and export it all in the app as a single folder. I also do understand that developing an app like this can be rather difficult, so I don’t want to sound ungrateful. I should also mention, I do not know much about .ida files, and I see that is an option in the app, so maybe those do exactly what I want and I just don’t know. Regardless, you guys are doing a wonderful job, and I cannot wait to see how the application grows moving forward!
Hello Michael, and thank you for your feedback! We absolute don’t think you’re ungrateful, and appreciate everyone’s ideas. Of course, some are more difficult to implement than others, but our app is what it is after only two years, precisely because of everyone’s ideas! We will be looking into doing gradients soon.
As for using your own folder icon as a base, it’s coming in the very next update! See https://www.foldercolorchanger.com/coming-soon-choose-your-own-folder-icon/
The IDA files are actually just a “design template”, so you can save your current “design” to re-use it later, either on the same PC or another PC where you’re running our app, so you don’t have to do it all over again.
Thank you so much for considering! I feel like this app has amazing potential to blow all the others out of the water. It’s very useful!
Very excited to see what comes with future updates. I especially look forward to implementing gradients somehow, it can make some folders stand out really well! I’ve attached some folder designs I have been working on for my game collections, but in some of these I used a different icon and only edited the overlay icon in this app.

Sometimes I go a little overboard with designs and trying to make things visually appealing, and this made me think of one more suggestion.
I see that using your own folder icon (Future update at this time) doesn’t allow for overlay images or icons, and I see that is coming in a future update, however I wondered how possible it would be to allow, for example, two overlay icons? Or being able to save a design as an ico file, re-importing it, and then adding an icon on top of that?
reason being, for the software I use, I like to use the logo of the software on the folder, or patterns that represent it like grids/etc. but I was thinking about status badges too, like the ones that natively show up in the app. (checkmarks, X’s, etc.) People could position status icons wherever they like, save it as a preset, and potentially slap it onto any folder in their system through the context menu! But I think this is essentially suggesting the “layer” idea again, haha. Regardless, being able to put a status on an existing folder icon could be useful for people who work on large scale projects and things like that.
I understand this is a lot though and my use case is niche, these features take a lot of time and money to make, so don’t feel like you absolutely need to respond or make any promises, I am just airing out my thoughts.
Thank you again so much, and good luck to everyone on the team.
Best wishes.
Rest assured, we’ll discuss your ideas during our dev meetings! Multiple overlay icons might pose a bit of a challenge due to how we’re currently implementing this feature, but we’ll certainly explore this concept. Once the option to use your own icon becomes available in the next update, you can always manipulate multiple overlay icons onto your base icon by exporting your interim design using Quickpick–>Export as PNG, and reopening it to add another overlay in this way, albeit a very manual process.
Does any version of this tool allow you to right-click a folder and change its color from a sub-menu in the right click menu list?
I don’t see it happening in the free version, but maybe the paid version?? I’d buy it if it included this type of quick-access function for basic folder colors.
Good day,
Due to how Windows 11 is enforcing rules on the right click menu, we only offer a single shortcut to run the app itself. Running the app via the context menu is actually slower than other methods, specifically due to changes Microsoft made to the Explorer shell. That said, you could enable hotkeys to run the app even faster than right clicking, and choosing a color on the color wheel or in any of the palettes in the premium version.
Thank you for the reply. The feature i mentioned works in FolderIco. I just don’t want to give them 30 bucks a year for an app that really doesn’t change over time.
Please consider adding this ability as it is way faster than waiting for an app to load, then making the needed change.
Also note that I am using your free version. When the app is open and I change a folder….if I select another folder while the app is still open…the apply icon to folder button grays out….making it useless for altering numerous folders in order.
just my feedback on what I have used thus far and what i need from a tool.
Please share a short video of the behavior in order for our devs to review.
We’ll look into adding a few of one’s last used colors to the menu in a future update. π
