IMPORTANT: This feature does not work on folders that you’ve customized in older versions of Windows 11 Folder Color Changer (or without this option enabled), as these folders won’t be in the database. To add such folders to the database, you need to re-do their customizations after enabling this option.
When you enable maintaining the database, Windows 11 Folder Color Changer keeps track of the folders that you customize, together with their icons. [Privacy note: The folder name is encrypted].
Once you back up the database, the list of folders and their icons, are backed up to a ZIP file. If you then proceed to restore this backup on another computer running Windows 11 Folder Color Changer, the app will check for a similar folder in the expected location and apply the icon automatically.
IMPORTANT: This process only work where the same folder exists in the same location on both computers; only the user folder is permitted to be different (e.g. c:\users\john\dropbox\work folder on one computer, and c:\users\johndoe\dropbox\work folder). If there is even the slightest change in location or spelling, the folder will be skipped during the Restore process. This shouldn’t pose much of a problem for cloud storage, as your folders would typically be synchronised to the same location, however, as this feature isn’t limited to cloud storage, be mindful in cases where you manually recreate folders on another computer.
Please note by simply adding folders to or removing folders from the folder list does not update the database. Only when you proceed to customize an icon does the folder get added to the database.
