Please report any bugs to support@foldercolorchanger.com. Kindly include details on how to reproduce the bug.
09/01/2026 We’re receiving reports that Google Drive is breaking custom folder icons. Our team is studying Google Drive’s behavior to determine if there’s a workaround. This is caused entirely by Google Drive and is not a bug in our app.
Status: The team is studying Google Drive’s behavior to determine if there’s a workaround.
Impact: Medium to High
03/05/2025 When exporting a PNG or IDA file, the icon size is 256×256.
Status: By design. As at the time of writing, the maximum icon size used by Windows Explorer is 256×256.
Impact: Not applicable
Workaround: Add ExportSize=512 to the Settings file to allow exporting 512×512. Please note that the built-in images will be distorted, but this should work fine for custom images.
03/05/2025 We are aware of a refresh issue when first running the app in dark mode and going to the new icon styles tab.
Status: Confirmed. Our team is working to address this in a future update.
Impact: Low
Workaround: Click on any of the icons to refresh.
23/04/2025 We are aware of a slight delay when opening IDA files.
Status: Confirmed. Our team is working to address this in a future update.
Impact: Low
09/04/2025 When enabling the Mac folder icon style and choosing the native style, the Mac folder icon style is retained, and colored blue.
Status: By design (if the Mac folder icon style is enabled). As at the time of writing, Mac uses a soft blue color for their native folder icon.
Impact: Low
09/04/2025 When selecting part of an image as my cover image, and returning to the cover image feature, the cover image is reset and my selection lost.
Status: Confirmed. We are not currently saving your selection. We will address this in a future update.
Impact: Low
UPDATE: 03/05/2025 This has been resolved as of version 1.1.0.2924/02/2025 When exporting any of the standard icons as an IDA file, the last used custom image file is included.Status: Confirmed. Our team is working to address this in a future update.Impact: Low
UPDATE: 09/04/2025 This has been resolved as of version 1.1.0.29.
21/02/2025 Thank you to those of you who are participating in the public testing of the feature to migrate the folder database. (1) When you send folders to the app from the context menu with the option to maintain the folder database on, the app is unable to reach the database, and shows an error message for every folder. (2) When you click Cancel to abort the process, nothing happens. (3) When you click cancel when applying a custom icon to many folders (e.g. 2000 folders), nothing happens. Status: Confirmed. These issues will be fixed in the next update. Impact: MediumWorkaround: Terminate the app using Task Manager.
UPDATE: 03/05/2025 This has been resolved as of version 1.1.0.2921/02/2025 When selecting a default palette, on running the app, in some cases the default palette is selected, but loads all white color swatches.Status: Confirmed. Our team is working to resolve this in a future update.Impact: LowWorkaround: Reselect your palette.
12/02/2025 When right clicking multiple folders and sending them to the app using the old context menu entry, only one folder (the first folder that you selected) is added.
Status: By design. The new context menu in Windows 11 offers more flexibility when sending multiple selected folders to a 3rd party app. The old context menu typically launches multiple instances of the app, which, in this case, is not practical. So, if you’re using the old context menu, the app behaves as it would in the old days, namely, it supports only one folder.
Impact: Low
Workaround: Use the new context menu if you’re a Windows 11 user. If you’re a Windows 10 user and you’d like to send multiple folders to the app, rather enable hotkeys, select the folders, and send them to the app using Alt-Q.
19/12/2024 When selecting a solid color image file as a cover image, the image is seemingly distorted.
Status: By design. We apply a shadow and fade-out effect to cover images. Our team will not be addressing this at this time, due to the peculiarity of opting for such a scenario when you can already select a color from within the app.
Impact: Low
19/12/2024 When opening an IDA file that contains a customized cover image, and then trying to customize the cover image further, the original cover image is not loaded.
Status: By design. Cover images are considered final designs for all intents and purposes. However, our team is looking into including the original cover image in the IDA file that should make it possible to re-customize the cover image.
Impact: Low
Workaround: Select the original image on your computer and customize from there on as per usual.
UPDATE: 9 APRIL 2025 As of version 1.1.0.29, you can check the box to keep the aspect ratio of the selected image when choosing an image on your computer as overlay icon.
19/12/2024 When selecting pictures in the overlay icon editor, the picture is squashed into a square.Status: By design. Overlay icons are supposed to be icons, i.e. square by definition (e.g. 64×64, 128×128 etc.). Our team will not be addressing this at this time.Impact: LowWorkaround: Modify your picture by layering it on a square, transparent background layer in your image editor, before selecting it as an overlay icon in our app.
07/12/2024 There is still a “jumpiness” around the 50% mark on the Advanced Color Mixer.
Status: Confirmed. Our team is working to address this in a future update.
Impact: Low
07/12/2024 Color in palette disappears when right clicking.
Status: By design. Right clicking is used to clear the color tile.
Impact: Not applicable
07/12/2024 When viewed as “List” or “Small” icons, the icons don’t always scale well
Status: By design. The icons created by our app are more suited towards larger viewing. Our team will not be addressing this at this time.
Impact: Low
Workaround: Hold CTRL and scroll your mouse wheel to find a better balance between icon size and detail.
07/12/2024 Double clicking a color tile in the palette no longer opens the color mixer.
Status: By design. We changed this to click and hold. Single click on an empty tile will open the color mixer to save time, as there is nothing else to do with an empty tile. Single click on a color tile will only select the color, as there are two possible pathways; using that color as is, or fine tuning the color in the color mixer.
Impact: Not applicable
05/11/2024 Custom network folder icons not showing.
Status: Inherited from Windows.
Impact: Low
Workaround: See linked article.
05/11/2024 Cover image/overlay icon/inset image disappears when selecting native color.
Status: By design. This allows you to clear the cover image/overlay icon/inset image.
Impact: Not applicable
05/11/2024 Native color changes when selecting a cover image:
Status: Confirmed. Our team is working to address this in a future update.
Impact: Low
Note: This is not the same issue as the other issue that occurs when selecting a cover image that does not fill the folder cover area.
27/05/2024 App takes a few seconds to start up and has a “flash effect” in dark mode.
Status: Confirmed. WinForms apps (such as this app) don’t natively support dark mode. We’re forcing the light mode / dark mode theme on the app, resulting in this delay. The older/slower the PC, the more noticeable this fill unfortunately be.
Impact: Medium-Low
Workaround: Enable hotkeys and open the app this way. While this workaround does not address the issue, it avoids having to wait out this start time every time you want to use the app.
27/05/2024 Some 3rd party dialogs use a different font / font size.
Status: Confirmed. Our team is working to address this in a future update.
Impact: Low
29/12/2023 App runs slowly from the context menu.
Status: By design. This is because of how Windows implements its new context menu for WinForms apps using Sparse packages.
Impact: Medium-Low
29/12/2023 The app takes very long to start.
Status: Confirmed. See Other apps in this niche boast about how fast they run. Why does this app run slower? Our team is always looking for more ways to optimize the app. As we find solutions that help boost performance, we implement them in future updates.
Impact: Medium
Workaround: Enable hotkeys. This leaves the app running in suspended mode, launching it nearly instantly when you use the ALT-Q or ALT-W hotkeys.
29/12/2023 Context menu in Windows does not always appear immediately after installing the app or logging on for the first time.
Status: Confirmed.
Impact: Low
Workaround: Give it some time first. If, after a minute or so, it still does not appear, simply select “Show more options” to open the “old” Windows context menu (no need to click anything else); our context menu will then appear. If this is not the case, try restarting Windows Explorer. This is not a bug in our app but due to inefficiences directly within Windows Explorer with how apps hook up to its context menu.
29/12/2023 If you enable to option to include sub folders and use the context menu or hotkeys, only the top level folders are added.
Status: By design. This is to safeguard against a situation where you accidently send a folder with many sub folders to the app causing the app to “hang”.
Impact: Low
Workaround: Open the app and drag the folders onto the target.
UPDATE: 12 February 2025 As of version 1.1.0.26, we’ve added progress bars.29/12/2023 If you add a folder with many sub folders the app “hangs”.Status: Confirmed. The app needs to iterate through the folders (and their sub folders) one by one.Impact: LowWorkaround: Drag smaller batches of folders/sub folders onto the target at a time.
29/12/2023 The ALT-W hotkey no longer works on the Desktop.
Status: Confirmed. We disabled this functionality on the Desktop for the time being, as Windows does not treat the Desktop as a typical folder, despite all of the familiar functionality.
Impact: Low
29/12/2023 “Standard” folders (e.g. Documents, Downloads, Desktop etc.) pinned to Quick Access/Home and elsewhere do not (always) reflect changes to their icon. When you browse to your User folder however, the icon for the actual user folder has been properly updated.
Status: Confirmed. This is because Quick Access/Home pins these standard Windows 11 folders as “virtual folders” as opposed to the actual folder. This is not a bug in our app.
Impact: Low
29/12/2023 Folders on the Desktop don’t always reflect changes. If this is a “standard” folder, the issue relates to the issue above. If this is your own folder, the issue relates to the issue below.
Status: Confirmed.
Impact: Low
29/12/2023 Folders do not always reflect changes.
Status: Confirmed. This is not a bug in our app. This issue is common with changes to folders, including through other apps. See Folder icons not updating/update slowly – Windows 11 Folder Color Changer.
Impact: Low
Workaround: Simply refresh Windows Explorer from the Tools tab for your changes to take effect.
Other known issues
- When setting folder colors in OneDrive, viewing those folders on a different PC will not show the color. This is by design because OneDrive does not sync folder settings. We’re working on a feature that will allow you to back up your folder icons and restore them on another computer, provided the folders are in the same location (typically OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.). Update: 27 May – This is now available as an experimental feature and is currently in testing and refinement. Update: 14 November 2024 – This is going to take longer to get to a stable, working feature. However, you can use the new feature to save your icon design to prepare an “Icon design archive” that you can copy to your other computers, and restore the folder’s look in this way in the interim. Update: 12 February 2025: We’ve opened up the feature for public testing in version 1.1.0.26.
- Some users have reported folder icons – including native Windows icons – in Windows Explorer to become blurry or pixelated. This is due to a rendering issue in Windows Explorer. Restart your PC to clear things up. Note: Simply restarting Windows Explorer doesn’t work in this case. This is not a bug in our app.
- If you change your accent color while the app is running, the accent colors in the app may become mixed between the old and new accent color. As a workaround, restart the app.
- If you change your Windows theme between light and dark while the app is running, the app may not detect the change, or may apply the change inconsistently. As a workaround, restart the app.
